Summer flowering
One of the most rewarding flowering plants for the late summer and autumn garden, offering an exceptional range of colour, form and size that few other plants can match. From compact bedding varieties to tall, architectural types, dahlias produce an abundance of blooms from July through to the first frost, making them an essential choice for gardeners seeking long lasting seasonal interest. Their versatility allows them to be grown in borders, pots and cutting gardens, where they provide a continuous supply of striking flowers for the home. With proper planting and care, dahlia tubers establish quickly in well drained soil and thrive in a sunny position, rewarding even modest attention with impressive results. Whether you are looking to create a bold display of vibrant colour or a more refined, tonal planting scheme, dahlias offer something for every style of garden. As a staple of the British summer garden, they are particularly valued for their reliability, strong stems and excellent vase life, making them ideal both for garden display and for cutting.
We have been supplying dahlias to Pashley Manor Gardens for over a decade, working closely with the team to create a display that returns year after year.
Each September, the gardens host their spectacular Dahlia Festival, with over 4,000 plants and more than 100 varieties on show. It is a wonderful opportunity to see dahlias at their peak and to experience the richness and variety they bring to the late summer garden.
IN THE GARDEN
Choose a sunny, sheltered position with fertile, well drained soil. Improve heavy ground with compost before planting.
Plant tubers 10 to 15cm deep, with the old stem just below the surface. Space roughly 45cm apart. Water in well and keep evenly moist as growth begins.
Pinch out the growing tip at around 30cm tall to encourage bushier plants and more flowers. Stake taller varieties early.
Deadhead regularly to prolong flowering until the first autumn frost.
IN CONTAINERS
Use a large container with good drainage and a rich, free draining compost.
Plant at the same depth as in the garden and place in full sun. Keep compost moist and feed during active growth.
After the first frost, lift and store tubers somewhere cool, dry and frost free until spring.
