Autumn

Autumn is when the spring garden is made

Everything on this page goes into the ground from September onwards, while the soil is still warm from summer: tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, alliums, crocus, the whole spring garden in fact. One autumn afternoon with a trowel and next spring is more or less settled, snowdrops in January through to the last tulips in May.

Tulips and daffodils carry most gardens, and the crocus and small bulbs slot in around them; the early bees do well out of those. September or October suits daffodils and crocus, hyacinths a little later, and tulips like November best, once the ground has lost its warmth. Colchicums and the autumn flowering crocus are quicker off the mark, in flower within weeks of planting. The bulbs are hand picked, as they have been here since 1860, and a variety that catches your eye is worth ordering while it is still on the list.
