Our bedding grade, a little smaller than top size, which makes them the sensible choice when you are planting in numbers. The scent is every bit the same.
Garden hyacinths are one grade down from top size, and for planting outdoors in any quantity they are the better buy. The spike is a shade lighter, which in a border is no bad thing. It stands up to weather rather than flopping, and it sits more comfortably among other plants than the very heavy show spike does.
Nothing is lost on scent. A dozen in a window box will send perfume into the house whenever the sun is on them, which is the whole reason for growing them near a door or a path.
Plant Them in Drifts
Hyacinths are too often planted thinly, one of each colour dotted about. They are far better in groups of ten or more of a single variety. Plant in autumn in well drained ground, 10cm deep and 5 to 8cm apart, in sun or light shade.
After the First Year
The first spring gives the tight, formal spike everyone pictures. From the second year on they come looser and more natural, which in a mixed border is the better look of the two. Left undisturbed they will carry on for three or four years before the clumps want dividing.
What to Plant With Them
They sit well beneath tulips and among muscari, and the blues are useful for cooling a hot colour scheme. They flower in April, alongside the mid-season tulips and the later daffodils.
