About Ixia

Corn lilies from the Cape

A delightful mixture of very exotic looking flowers which are native of South Africa. They should be planted in a sunny position, producing attractive sword like foliage with masses of dainty star shaped flowers on wiry stems in July, at about 30cm.

Give them the warmest spot you have

Ixia ask for the warmest, sunniest place in the garden with sharp drainage, and they open their flowers wide in the sun. Plant them in groups at the front of the border or in the rockery, or grow them in pots in a cold greenhouse for earlier flowers. They are not reliably hardy in a cold wet winter, so a sheltered position matters.

The bulbs supplied by Bloms cost the most, gave the most flowers (26), were of top quality and had the potential of doubling themselves next year. The trials indicated that you get what you pay for.
