Lily Flowered Tulips

Back to Tulips

Lily Flowered tulips get their name from their resemblance to lilies, with their pointed petals and the way they open when the sun is bearing down on them but close to a perfect form in the evening.  They are more reminiscent of the original Ottoman tulips rather than the traditional hybridised Dutch tulips that we are so used to today. Despite their appearance these tulips are very robust. They come in a wide variety of colours perfect for any setting in your garden, they will thrive in a border, pots, containers, or bedding. One variety to note, ‘Ballerina’, with an orange scent is an excellent option for pollinators.

    About Lily Flowered Tulips

    The oldest ancestor

Tulip acuminata, dating back to the 17th century, is widely thought to be the parent of the modern lily flowered tulips. The long spidery petals are very reminiscent of the tulips favoured by the Ottomans, predating the traditional Dutch cupped shaped tulips.

    Ballerina

Among tulips, early flowering singles were the first acclaimed for their scent, but most famously the lily flowered tulip Ballerina is known for its fragrance of orange blossom. When planting outside, you need generous drifts to make an impact.
