This category has grown immensely in popularity over the last few years, with some fantastic new additions. With up to 7 heads per stem, these are quite remarkable specimens: a rather unique variety in the tulip category as a whole, with an ever-growing collection. Although they have quite a load on their stem, in general, they’re a fairly short variety, meaning that wind and rain are not a massive concern. They will never disappoint when planted in any garden situation.
Both praestans Fusilier and Unicum produce up to four flowers per bulb, creating vibrant colour visible from a significant distance. Flowering from as early as mid-March, if you are planting red tulips in pots, these should be your first choice.
Where they suit
Tulip praestans is a superb standalone garden plant for early spring, sturdy and relatively short, and can be a good naturaliser. These are invaluable in the rock garden, in containers, and even when used as underplanting for some of their taller cousins.
