Top Size Hyacinths

Our largest grade of bulb. More bells to the spike, a heavier flower, and the size to choose when the plant will be looked at closely: in a bowl on the table, on a windowsill, or forced for Christmas.

About Top Size Hyacinths

The difference between a top size hyacinth and a garden one is the amount of flower already formed inside the bulb. A bigger bulb carries more bells on the spike, so it opens fuller and heavier. That shows most when the plant is seen at close quarters rather than across a border.

This is the grade to choose for forcing. A smaller bulb can be forced, but it gives a thin spike, and after the trouble of potting up and waiting through the dark weeks a thin spike is a real disappointment. Start with the best bulb and the rest looks after itself.

Where to Use Them

Bowls, pots by the door, and anywhere the flower will be seen up close. They are just as good in the border, though if you are bedding out in any quantity the garden grade is the more sensible buy.

A Word on Staking

The heavier the spike, the more likely it is to want help in a wet spring. Push a cane down alongside the stem and straight through the bulb, then tie just under the flower head. Done that way it holds the spike upright without showing.

When Do They Flower?

April in the garden, with the mid-season tulips. Indoors, prepared bulbs potted at the end of September will be in flower around Christmas.
