The First Sign of Autumn

Autumn Flowering Bulbs
Cyclamen and colchicums coming into flower is the first proper sign of autumn here. What an underestimated flower the colchicum is. They are one of the plants we always look forward to.
Naked Ladies
They have large strap like foliage similar to daffodils. This dies back well before the flowers emerge in September, hence the common name, Naked Ladies.
Some are put off by the long period of foliage only. We like it, it reminds us that they are still there and doing well, waiting to delight us in the autumn.

In Grass
They do look excellent in grass. Meadows and orchards in the West of England were once full of them.
Remember when using them in the garden that the foliage takes up far more room than the flowers. It is worth planting them with a companion that will add some colour when the colchicum has only foliage to show.
Flowering Without Soil
Colchicums will even flower indoors without soil or water, they do not make roots until after flowering, when temperatures drop and moisture increases.
Two Worth Knowing
Waterlily bears a close resemblance to the waterlily, the large flowers a bright lilac mauve. speciosum album is a graceful perennial with stunning, pure white, crocus-like flowers that bloom in the autumn.
