Split-cupped Narcissi

Back to Daffodils

Split cupped daffodils have the cup divided rather than whole, opening back against the petals so that the flower reads almost flat. Division 11, and quite unlike any other daffodil.

    About Split Cupped Daffodils

In the split cupped daffodils the corona is divided, usually for more than half its length, and lies back flat against the perianth. The effect is a wide, open, almost butterfly-like flower, and they are sometimes sold under that name.

Lemon Beauty and Gold Disc show the form most clearly of the ones we grow. Most stand around 40 to 45cm.

Where Split Cupped Daffodils Do Best

They make an unusual focal point in a border, where the flat open face reads well from a distance, and they are striking in arrangements for exactly the same reason.

    When Do They Flower?

March into May, with Palmares the last of them to go over.

The bulbs supplied by Bloms cost the most, gave the most flowers (26), were of top quality and had the potential of doubling themselves next year. The trials indicated that you get what you pay for.
