    Christmas Hyacinths

It was at the beginning of the last century that we introduced the first specially treated hyacinth bulbs. Ever since, we have been developing and perfecting our method.

    How They Are Prepared

Unlike regular forcing hyacinths, young bulbs of selected stocks are lifted early and placed in protective chambers where they receive continuous treatment from heated and humidity controlled fresh air. Under these conditions the embryo flower develops early and easily inside the bulb.

This process is not completed until early September, bulbs offered before then should be avoided. The bulbs should be potted by early October.

    Potting

Use bulb fibre for potting, the top quarter of the bulb should be visible above the soil line. Potting should not be too firm, otherwise there is a tendency for the bulbs to push themselves out of the compost as they form their roots.

The bowls should be moved into a cold frame or against a north facing sheltered wall and covered with soil. We need to encourage good root growth which is necessary before any attempt at forcing is made.

Alternatively, they can be placed in a cool dark place such as a cellar or cupboard but make sure they do not dry out.

Forcing from the First of December

On or around the first of December it is time to begin the slow forcing process. The hyacinths should be moved and placed in a dark room with a temperature of approximately 20 degrees. The bulbs should be left like this until the flower bud is well out of the neck of the bulb, approximately 6-8cm.

The bulbs can then be moved to a sunny position and allowed to flower normally.

During this time, it is important to ensure that the bulbs receive plenty of moisture. Keep away from radiators to ensure healthy growth and a longer flowering time.
