The widow iris
Previously categorised as Iris tuberosa. A curiously sombre but quaint flower, with superb velvet black falls and greenish standards, that always draws a second look. It flowers in April at about 25cm.

Where it will be happy
Give it a warm sunny spot and sharp drainage; it comes from the dry hillsides of the eastern Mediterranean and resents sitting wet. Plant it somewhere you pass at close quarters, because the colouring does not read from across a garden and the flowers are faintly scented in the afternoon.
