Starting spring early
Consider starting spring early with snowdrops, aconites, crocus and cyclamen. There are very few plants that require such a small amount of attention as our spring bulbs, for such great reward. Nothing can be more pleasing than the growth of these plants in appropriate situations, or a beautiful carpet of blooms underneath the shade of a tree.

Tougher than they look
The winter blooming buttercup is as hardy as the stones among which it does not mind growing. Hyemalis is the earliest of all, flowering January to March at about 10cm; cilicica is the large flowered variety. Plant 4cm deep in light shade and leave them to make golden carpets.
