Cyclamineus daffodils have petals that sweep back from the trumpet as though caught in a wind, and the flower hangs its head a little. Division 6. Among the earliest to open, and among the best of all for naturalising in grass.
They take their character from Narcissus cyclamineus itself, whose petals fold right back from a long narrow trumpet. The garden hybrids keep that swept back look to a greater or lesser degree, and nearly all of them carry a single flower to the stem with the head held a little down.
February Gold is usually the first to open, with Jetfire and Jack Snipe following on through March. Most stand between 20 and 30cm.
Where Cyclamineus Daffodils Do Best
This is one of the three divisions we would single out for naturalising, along with the triandrus and the poeticus. Being early they let you cut the grass sooner, approximately six weeks after the flowers have finished. The smaller free flowering sorts are also the ones we would recommend first for a patio container.
When Do They Flower?
From February into April depending on the variety, so a mixed planting will give you a long run of flower.
