Daffodils and bunched narcissi always bring welcome cheer at this time of year. Particularly enjoyable and easy to grow on pebbles are the Paperwhites.
Many bulbs have been grown in water containers ever since they were first introduced into Western Europe and paperwhites are ideal for this.
Place on a layer of clean pebbles to within 5cm of the rim of the bowl. Place the bulbs on the pebbles and fill the bowl with more pebbles.
This will help prevent the roots from pushing the bulb out of the bowl. The pebbles should be nearly up to the neck of the bulb to make sure they are sufficiently anchored.
Use only top size bulbs. Smaller bulbs lack the stored nutrients to provide satisfactory results. Rainwater is preferable to tap water.
When the stems start to emerge, turn the container regularly to make sure the plants grow straight and do not lean towards the light.
Growing bulbs in water gives an interesting perspective on how they grow, a bit like growing cress at school. It is nice for a child to see something growing rather than having to wait until the spring, and thankfully it works easily.
