Lily of the Valley

Lily of the Valley needs little introduction. Arching stems of white scented bells appear in May above fresh green leaves, happiest in a cool shaded corner with soil that does not dry out. Plant the pips just below the surface and leave them be; a patch will slowly spread into the sort of ground cover other plants cannot manage, and a few stems picked for the house are one of the joys of late spring.
