The end of March or early April is generally the time to start planting many of the more tender summer flowering bulbs, typically in an unheated greenhouse or cold frame. If you are planting straight into the garden, you must wait until the danger of frost has passed – typically late April or early May in most areas, though colder regions might need to hold off until mid-May.

Summer flowering bulbs can add real panache to any border. They are also ideal for the patio, being among the most exotic and colourful of all our summer plantings. Open, well drained soil is essential, an ideal soil is rich in humus, leaf mould, and good compost. If your soil is heavy clay, work in some grit or sharp sand along with organic matter before planting. When using planters, remember that the bigger the container, the easier the bulbs are to grow, larger pots retain moisture more evenly and give roots proper room to develop.
