Canna
Cannas were initially prized for their lush foliage, and it is still half the reason for growing them. Start them indoors, move them out when the frosts have passed, and they will carry the border through to autumn; the compact varieties are ideal for large pots. After the first frost, lift the rhizomes and store them dry and frost-free, much as you would dahlias.
