Eucomis

Eucomis or Pineapple Flower are so called because of the top of the flowers resemblance to a small pineapple. It is native of tropical and southern Africa. The exotic looking flowers rise from tufts of narrow foliage, the numerous tiny flowers are borne on a strong straight stem. As a rough guide you can fit three bulbs into a tub about 30cm across, though you may feel that they will be overpowered by their foliage in this situation so planting in a sunny border with warm, fertile soil may be for the best.

These should generally be planted from March onwards as temperatures start to increase. They are natives of tropical and southern Africa and are ideal for either the summer patio or for added interest in empty pockets in the border.

Tips for Planting Eucomis Bulbs  & Getting the Best results

Good drainage is important, so plant the bulbs on a layer of sand. While they are ideal for summer displays, they will need some protection from severe frost. Covering with a bin liner works well if they are in pots, especially when frost is accompanied by a penetrating wind. Give a heavy dressing of leaf mould in the autumn after flowering.
