Although they like full sun, a bit of shade is fine. Alliums hate sitting in wet soil, especially over the winter. It is advised that you improve clay soil additional grit or sharp sand to improve drainage. These should be positioned about three times their own depth; that is, a 5cm bulb wants to go in about 15cm deep. Ensure you are planting pointing side up.
Space the bulbs according to their size – smaller ones can be 10 cm apart, and larger ones can be 20-25 cm apart. Group plantings are much more effective than planting single ones, so plant in clusters of 5, 7, or 9. Once planted, they will need to be watered to settle the soil around them. Once they are watered, there is little to do other than appreciate the beauty that comes in the spring. Most do not need to be fed, and prefer to be left alone so once planted, bulbs will return spring after spring with little effort.
