Paeonies
Few plants make such a statement in early summer as the paeony, and none outlives it; a well planted paeony will still be flowering when the gardener’s grandchildren take over the plot. Ours are chosen for shorter, stronger stems that stand with little or no staking, garden plants first and cut flowers second, though they are glorious in the vase. Plant the crowns shallowly, no more than 5cm deep, in rich soil and sun; planting too deep is the one common cause of a paeony that will not flower.
