It makes its growth through the warm summer months, the leaves do not come through the soil until after flowering.
Where to Put Them
Striking in appearance, bowdenii is the hardiest variety available for spring planting. Their ideal positioning is against a south-facing wall with the nose of the bulb just below soil level.
Poor Soil Suits Them
In their native South Africa nerines grow in poor soil. A rich soil will produce bigger bulbs and leaves but at the expense of the flowers.
Aim for well-drained soil (add horticultural grit and sand where necessary) that is low in nitrogen.
Patience
The bulbs perform best when left undisturbed and will produce their best flowers in the second and subsequent years. Patience is the key, a skill all gardeners have to acquire.
Protect during the winter and early spring with a thick layer of bracken until the risk of frost has passed.
Alba and Bowdenii
Alba carries pure white flowers with delicately waved petal edges. Bowdenii is known for its rose-pink flowers on stiff stems, and is widely appreciated in the cut flower market.
