The red hot poker needs no introduction, though the modern sorts might. Cream, lemon, amber, coral, the old scarlet: neater plants than their reputation, flowering June to September. Watch the bees queue on the spikes. Sun, and winter drainage above all; a wet crown is the one reliable killer. Established clumps go on for decades. Cut a few spikes for the house, a bold vase if ever there was one.
