Sprekelia
Sprekelia formosissima, the Jacobean lily, bears extraordinary deep crimson flowers of orchid-like form, one to a stem, in early summer. It has been grown in this country since the seventeenth century and still stops visitors in their tracks. Plant with the neck of the bulb at soil level in the sunniest, most sheltered spot you have, in sharply drained soil, or grow it in a pot brought under cover for winter. Only in mild districts will it overwinter outdoors, and then under a thick dry mulch.
