Large Flowering Crocus

We hardly realise how much we should miss the Crocuses, which in Spring enhance our gardens with bright colour. With golden yellow, purple, white or striped blooms, they fill us with pleasure as we see their flowers expanded in the sunshine of a bright spring day. The larger and later flowering (March) Dutch crocus are one of the most impactful of all the early flowering bulbs. Their colour glows in the spring sunshine when they open but, they remain closed during bad weather and at night, protecting their nectar for visiting bees and butterflies on sunny days.

The Most Impactful of the Early Bulbs

Large Flowering Crocus

Grown from selected stocks the large flowering crocus produce an abundance of very large flowers. They are particularly suitable for naturalising in grass and woodland where their larger size gives them the advantage over the winter flowering varieties.

Naturalising in Grass

As well as the border crocus are spectacular in grass. When planting outside, you need generous drifts to make an impact.

Dividing the Clumps

The best time to divide crocus is in September, if you can find the corms. The easier alternative is to wait until after they have finished flowering and their foliage has begun to die back, usually in late spring or early summer.
