These tulips, also known as botanical tulips, are the wildflowers of the tulip family and the parents of the larger more extravagant hybrids we are so familiar with today. By their very nature they are amongst the most versatile and long-lasting of all the tulips we grow. Planted in a rich well-drained position they will flower for many years to come. With some planning they can be chosen to flower anytime from late March to early May. Whether planted in groups in the border, woodland, rockeries, or containers on the patio they are a fascinating inclusion for all spring gardens.
Tulip humilis, and their likely cousins aucheriana and cretica, are among the best and most interesting of the dwarf species, growing on mountain slopes near the snow line. The slightly taller batalinii Red Hunter do well planted at the edge of woodlands or near trees and hedges; the soil will be kept dryer in the summer and they will naturalise well.
The Lady Tulip
Then there is clusiana, known to generations of gardeners as the Lady Tulip. Far less formal than modern hybrids, it lends a very natural feel to the garden. Interestingly, it cannot be crossed with any of the other tulips we grow; we are told it is because it has fewer chromosomes. There is some argument that it has a classification of its own.
