They are harvested earlier than other hyacinths and treated to advance the development of the flower embryo. Daffodils and bunched narcissi always bring welcome cheer at this time of year, and the dramatic amaryllis are always stunning, our bulbs sized at 30-32cm to give a display far superior to those bought elsewhere. Bulbs to Flower on Christmas Day
Without the Aid of a Greenhouse
Going back to the 1970s a big feature in our catalogues were bulbs to flower on Christmas day without the aid of a greenhouse. Sadly less popular now, there are so many retail outlets selling them at Christmas, growing your own bulbs is rewarding and the quality is far superior.
Where the Prepared Hyacinth Came From
It was at the beginning of the last century that we introduced the first specially treated hyacinth bulbs. Ever since, we have been developing and perfecting our method.
The Dramatic Amaryllis
The dramatic amaryllis are always stunning at this time of year. Our bulbs, sized at 30-32cm, are guaranteed to give a stunning display far superior to those bought elsewhere.
Soak the roots and lower section of the bulb in tepid water for 24 hours before planting. Use a good loam and leaf mould compost with sufficient silver sand to keep the mixture porous.
About half the bulb should be left exposed after planting. Make a cone shape for the bulb to sit on and spread the roots out well before filling the pot. To initiate growth, bottom heat is important, a mantlepiece is ideal.
Paperwhites and Narcissi
Daffodils and bunched narcissi always bring welcome cheer at this time of year. Particularly enjoyable and easy to grow on pebbles are the Paperwhites. The pebbles should be nearly up to the neck of the bulb to make sure they are sufficiently anchored.
