Plant When The Soil Is Right
I am often asked when bulbs should be planted. The best advice came from a farmer friend many years ago, plant when the soil conditions are right. If conditions are too dry, or indeed too wet, be patient. Generally, we need to wait for soil temperatures start to cool and there to be sufficient moisture in the soil. Given the summer we have had lightly dig your borders ahead of planting, all bulbs benefit from well drained friable soil.
When planting try to reinforce your garden’s existing style. For casual landscapes, group bulbs in an irregular manner to represent how they would grow in nature. A more formal look will be achieved planting the same bulbs in rows or structured shapes alongside paths or a driveway. Shrubs and hedges provide a perfect backdrop. Treat yourself to a plant that you may not have grown before. This not only adds interest but will, without doubt enhance our gardening knowledge.
