Generally these species are natives of damp meadows and woodlands and do well in borders and for naturalising. Plant 5cm (2″) deep and 7cm (3″) apart in moisture retentive fertile soil. The exceptions are acmopetala and persica which require well drained soil in full sun and Pontiac which needs protection from moisture when dormant. Position in sun or dappled shade.

These are the fritillaries that repay a closer look. Their distinctive shapes and colours are not found commonly in other bulbs, and they are at their best where you can see them properly, in a single pot or a small grouping rather than lost in the length of a border.
Fritillaries are beautiful and rewarding plants to grow, they love the light shade of woodland conditions and can be stunning in pots. Many of these smaller bulbs can easily be lost in the border unless planted in larger swathes. Planted nearer the house or in containers they can be enjoyed all the more.

Most of these are natives of damp meadows and woodlands and want moisture retentive soil. The exceptions are acmopetala and persica, which require well drained soil in full sun, and Pontiac, which needs protection from moisture when dormant.
Each flower has a large nectar bearing cavity at the base making them an important plant for pollinators, at a point in the year when there is little else in flower for them.
