The saffron crocus. Its grassy foliage appears alongside soft violet blue flowers, and the filaments produce true saffron for the kitchen. Flowering in October at about 10cm, with no leaves to hide it. Plant 5cm deep in July or August in a sunny well drained spot.
Chris’s letters note it is thought to have been first cultivated commercially in the reign of Edward III, in the village that is now Saffron Walden.
