Description

A tall bearded iris introduced in 1929 and still worth its place. The standards are raspberry passing to bronze, the falls a deep velvety wine red, finished with orange gold beards. About 80cm, flowering May and June.

Plant the rhizome so that its top sits at the surface and stays exposed to the sun. Sit it on a low mound of soil with the roots spread down either side, and allow about 30cm between plants. Do not mulch over it or let neighbours shade it; sun on the rhizome is what makes it flower.

Not available for autumn 2026. We are not supplying Indian Chief this season, though we hope to offer it again. The bearded iris we do have are Bianca, pure white with a yellow throat; Red Wine, copper orange with deep wine-red outer petals; and Sugar Blues, a lovely shade of blue with an orange yellow beard. All three are on our Iris Germanica (Bearded Iris) page.
