Ornithogalum
Chincherinchee sounds made up. It is Afrikaans, more or less the sound the dry stems make rubbing together, and Ornithogalum saundersiae is the giant of the tribe: ivory flowers, each with a dark eye, on 90cm stems in late summer. As a cut flower it borders on stubborn, a fortnight in the vase and often more. Bulbs go in 10cm deep once frosts pass, sun and drainage, or start them under glass to bring the flowers forward. Lift before winter and store dry.
