ORNITHOGALUM

Ornithogalum saundersiae, or giant chincherinchee, is a stunning perennial that produces large, fragrant white flowers with prominent black ovaries on tall stems in late spring or early summer. This exotic plant comes from South Africa and has a sweet scent that attracts butterflies, bees and hummingbirds. Ornithogalum saundersiae is very useful for planting at random in shady positions and for naturalising in places where few other bulbs will grow. Each stem can have up to 25 flowers, making a truly dramatic statement. Ornithogalum saundersiae bulbs should be planted in spring after the risk of frost has passed, or earlier under glass, and lifted in autumn to overwinter indoors. They like a well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Ornithogalum saundersiae bulbs are ideal for adding colour and fragrance to borders, rockeries, or containers.
