Better start before planting time is upon us. Looking back to past summers I found this line from 2023 “This weather reminds me of bulb planting in the autumn, trying to find a few dry days to get something done.” What a difference to this year, although we did get our dose of drizzle for […]

While the sunshine gives us the chance to enjoy our garden, it does mean we have to pay some attention to watering. A few simple shifts in your daily routine can be the difference between a stressed border and a breathtaking display. Getting the Timing Right I always prefer to water in the early evening. […]

Happy Easter Warmer weather approaching, with a local high of 21 °C on Wednesday. This is a great time of year to be out in the garden. After all the rain we have had one thing to watch for when walking around your garden is soil capping, a surface crust on the soil. It is […]

Bloms Dahlias One of the most rewarding flowering plants for the late summer and autumn garden, offering an exceptional range of colour, form and size that few other plants can match. From compact bedding varieties to tall, architectural types, dahlias produce an abundance of blooms from July through to the first frost, making them an […]

At last, the drier weather has allowed for some real gardening. Muscles that have not been used for far too long are complaining. It is a pleasure to be able to walk around the garden observing the new signs of life as they develop rather than trudging through mud. Lilium Fusion, Two Years On lilium […]

The relatively dry weather last week certainly helped the garden. The lilies just starting to emerge brought flashbacks to last summer’s brilliant display but reminded me of the only serious pest I really need to deal with: the lily beetle. The Amish Way with Pests I have been reading about how the Amish control pests, […]

Yesterday I saw sunshine! A brief respite, more heavy rain this morning and still 5 months until St. Swithin’s Day. On a brighter note, our spring catalogue is going to press tomorrow and should be with you by the end of the week. There is not much that can be done in the garden at […]

After light rain today, the weather is set to improve, remaining pretty dry for the rest of the week. The dry days early last week certainly helped, I even managed to get some work done in the garden. The long range forecasts are for more settled weather. My strategy going forward is to take advantage […]

If you are planning to add a splash of colour to your garden this year by using some well-chosen Lilies, now is the time to decide. With the exception of some of the species hybrids, such as Lilium candidum and martagon, spring is the time for planting lilies. Moving existing bulbs within your garden should […]

Déjà vu? “Although temperatures are not that far below the average, at least when the sun comes out, the cold winds make it feel chilly. If you can dodge the showers, it is quite good out in the garden, but if the ground is too wet, especially if your soil is of a heavy nature, […]
